Working at Birdworld
Working, volunteering, or carrying out work experience at Birdworld can be an exceptionally rewarding experience.
Any available opportunities will be listed below.
Part time weekend and seasonal positions available working within the visitor services team.
Various hours available in a variety of visitor facing roles including Front of House, Admissions, Retail, and Catering, all in a friendly team environment.
We can offer work experience for students who are aged 16 or above and who are studying an animal related field, or are planning to do so. Birdworld is able to offer placements in one of the three following areas:
Jenny Wren Farm – The Jenny Wren Farm houses small and large mammals and birds, including domestic fowl, sheep and pigs. Duties here involve general animal husbandry, routine maintenance and occasional interaction with visitors.
Bird Park – with over 160 species, this area offers a varied opportunity for those with a keen interest in birds. Duties will include food preparation and delivery, cleaning of enclosures / work areas and seasonal tasks as undertaken by our aviculture team.
Education – This is our public facing team and duties would involve interacting with visitors as well as helping to prepare educational material to be delivered at a later time. This could also involve assisting with the public flying displays as well as general animal husbandry of the presentation animals.
Placements will be allocated on a first come first served basis and we restrict one student per work area at any one time. Students are expected to work our normal hours, depending upon the work area and time of year, taking breaks similar to our full time staff.
Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, we are not currently taking enquiries/applications for Work Experience placements. Please check back again soon.
We have opportunities to volunteer in several areas, depending upon your interest. You can volunteer with us from the age of 16 – and there’s no upper age limit! We ask for a commitment of time on a regular basis over an agreed period to ensure that any training we give is reciprocated fairly and in return we offer experience in a friendly zoo environment and fun, challenging work.
Our staff work from 8am each day, and have an average 8 hour working day. Volunteers can of course work different hours but again we ask that these be agreed in advance. If you are keen to pursue this further, then please consider your situation and the commitment you are willing to make, as well as which area you would like to be considered for.
